John - chapter 3

This week we're reading John 3.  Pretty good chapter.  Here's the link in case you don't have a Bible handy.  A couple questions to ponder and comment on:

1.  What do you think of Nicodemus?  Is he bold, cowardly, curious, clueless?
2.  How would you imagine yourself having that conversation with Jesus?  What would that be like to be the one who prompts the Lord to talk about being 'born again', and who got to hear the original version of John 3:16?
3.  What can we learn from John the Baptist, particularly in v. 30 - "He must become greater, I must become less."?  Is that encouraging or not?

Feel free to comment on these questions or any other points related to chapter 3...next week - chapter 4!

  1. I'm not sure whether or not to be impressed with Nicodemus. Is he brave for going to visit Jesus, or a chicken since he goes at night?

  2. I think that might be both cowardly and curious, and he's certainly clueless. The fact that Jesus uses a metaphor including the words "light and darkness" suggest that possibly Jesus is alluding to the cowardliness of Nicodemus coming at night.
At the same time, I think that the simple fact that he actually came (even if it's done in a shady method) reflects the fact that he desires to learn. Had he done it at daylight in front of certain religious leaders or groups, I might think it was done with malice which would be even worse than being a coward.
