Matthew 13

Then he told them many parables, saying "A farmer went out to sow his seed." v. 3

The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people in parables?" v. 10

He replied, "Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. v. 11

"Listen to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart.  This is the seed sown along the path.  The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.  But since they have no root, they last only a short time.  When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.  The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.  But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it.  This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown." v. 18-23

Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.  But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away." v. 24-25

"'No', he answered, 'because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them.  Let both grow together until the harvest.  At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it to my barn.'" v. 29-30

"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.  When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field." v. 44

"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.  When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it." v. 45-46

When Jesus had finished these parables he moved on from there.  "Isn't this the carpenter's son?  Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?  Aren't his sisters with us?  Where then did this man get all these things?"  And they took offense at him. v. 53, 55-57

Matthew 12

"I tell you that something greater than the temple is here...for the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." v. 6, 8

"How much more valuable is a person than a sheep!  Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." v. 12

But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus. v. 14

Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see.  v. 22

"Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters." v. 30

"Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. v. 33

"For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." v. 41

Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you."  He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?"  Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers.  For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." v. 47-50

Matthew 11

"Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?" v. 3b

"The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor." v. 5

"Then what did you go out to see?  A prophet?  Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet." v. 9

"For John came neither eating nor drinking and they say 'he has a demon.'  The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they say 'here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.'  But wisdom is proved right by her deeds." v. 18-19

"All things have been committed to me by my Father.  No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." v. 27-30

Matthew 10

"The kingdom of heaven has come near." v. 7b

"the worker is worth his keep." v. 10b

"I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.  Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves."  v. 16

"But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.  At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you." v. 19-20

"You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved." v. 22

"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul." v. 28a

"So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." v. 31

"Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.  But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven."  v. 32-33

"Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.  Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it." v. 38-39

"And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward." v. 42
